UFC fans aren’t happy with Jon Jones and it’s not hard to see why.
Jones, the UFC heavyweight champion, has been accused of ‘ducking’ a fight with Brit Tom Aspinall to unify their division.
Aspinall has been the interim heavyweight champion for over 500 days now and under any other circumstances would have been awarded his well-deserved title shot by this point.
The 31-year-old has opened up about the situation many times, revealing this week that Jones’ financial demands are holding up what has the potential to be the fight of the century.
This has led to many fans, including Aspinall, to say Jones is ‘ducking’ and avoiding a fight with the Englishman.
Jones was recording himself riding a moped on an Instagram live video on Monday when he responded to these claims.
“I’ve got people in the chat calling me a duck,” he said. “Meanwhile, I’m living my absolute best life”
“I don’t know if it’s considered ducking when you’re living good. I don’t think it works like that.”
The short clip has since been shared on social media hundreds of times and not a single MMA fan seems to agree.
“Terrible response,” one wrote, responding to Jones’ comments.
Another said: “Jon needs to just vacate the belt if he’s living his best life,” while a third added: “Dude needs to be stripped of the belt now so the heavy weight division can move on.”
A fourth commented: “It still very much works like that,” while a fifth added: “Why is the UFC letting Jones ruin an entire division…”
Jones said ‘I don’t know if it’s considered ducking when you’re living good,’ and fans disagreedGetty Aspinall is simply waiting for news from UFC CEO Dana WhiteGettyJones is arguably the most successful mixed martial artist of all time, having become the UFC’s youngest-ever champion at the age of 23 in 2011.
He won the UFC light heavyweight title against Mauricio Rua and defended it a whopping 13 times before injuries forced him to stay away from the sport for over three years.
His last defence came against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February 2020 in a fight many fans thought he could’ve lost.
‘Bones’ then returned to action at UFC 285 in March 2023 after packing on the pounds and defeating Ciryl Gane to win heavyweight gold for the first time.
He has since defended it once against the now-retired Stipe Miocic, during a time Aspinall has utilised to cement himself as the No. 1 contender to Jones’ belt.
“I think it’s just down to money on his side,” Aspinall said, speaking via the High Performance podcast on Monday.
“So I will fight whenever, wherever he wants, but it’s down to money.
Bones beat Mauricio Rua at UFC 128 to become the youngest champion in UFC historyGetty Aspinall has said Jones’ financial demands are holding up the fightGetty“At this stage in his career, he’s had an amazing career. He’s 37 years old, but not only that, he’s got a million miles on the clock.
“So he’s got a lot of damage on the body, took a lot of shots to the head, and that’s not me saying anything negative about that’s the reality of it.
“I’m sure Jon Jones is aware of that; when you put him in with – I’m not trying to blow my own trumpet – but I’m literally the most dangerous guy in the UFC if you look at the stats.”
Aspinall is, in fact, one of the most dangerous guys in the UFC, given he possesses the shortest average fight time in the organisation’s history.
The Mancunian has finished seven of his eight victories in the promotion in the first round, with his only defeat coming 15 seconds into his first fight with Curtis Blaydes in 2022 when he suffered a torn MCL after a leg kick.
Aspinall became the next in line to fight for Jones’ belt after knocking out Sergei Pavlovich in November 2023 to become the UFC interim heavyweight champion.
The 32-year-old then defended his status against Blaydes at UFC 304 eight months later and hasn’t fought since.
He is now the promotion’s longest-reigning interim champion of all, having held the belt for 549 days as of May 13, 2025.
It was reported that Jones was asking for more than $30million (£22.6m) to fight Aspinall, although those rumours have never been confirmed.
