Jofra Archer could make a return to Test cricket, starting with the India vs England series. The English speedster last played a Test match in 2021 and has since struggled with multiple injuries and surgeries. Now, those days seem to be behind the Rajasthan Royals pacer, who could face the Men in Blue next month.
Jofra Archer is likely for red ball return, will he make the India vs England series?
Jofra Archer’s struggles with injuries meant that the ECB have always used more caution when using his services. The 30-year-old last played a first-class game in 2021. In fact his last Test was also against India in Ahmedabad. Since then, Archer has largely played t20s to manage his workload and fitness.
The English pacer has slowly taken up ODIs, playing a handful of games over the last three years. He was named in the ODI squad for the West Indies ODIs later this month, but not named in the T20 squad.
That could open up a spot for him in the England Lions squad, who face India A before the India vs England Tests. Archer has been in fine form in the IPL 2025, consistently bowling above 145 kph. He seems in no discomfort and his recurring injury issues seem to be a thing of the past.
India A and England Lions face off in a four-day game at Northampton, starting on June 6. While Archer’s selection for that game isn’t certain, leaving him out of the T20 squad has raised optimism in England’s ranks. The 30-year-old’s IPL 2025 campaign with the Rajasthan Royals ends on May 24, clearing him to play 3 ODIs. The final ODI vs West Indies is on June 3, 3 days before the India A clash.
Archer return might not be good news for India
Should Archer feature in Northampton and manage to remain injury-free, a return to the Test squad won’t be far. It is unlikely that he plays all 5 Tests, but a game or two could still be good news for Ben Stokes. With James Anderson and Stuart Broad both retired, England are desperate for some fast bowling impetus and Archer could provide that.
In his short Test career, the 30-year-old has made a name for himself with aggressive bowling. He famously hit Steve Smith with a vicious bouncer that left the Australian concussed in 2019. In 8 Tests at home, Jofra has 30 wickets at an average of 26.86. He picked up 22 wickets in the 2019 Ashes, averaging just 20.27.
Given India’s inexperienced batting order, Archer could very well feast on his return to Test cricket.
