Joel Klatt calls out Michigan for ‘self-serving’ suspension of Sherrone Moore

Joel Klatt understands Michigan wants to try to get ahead of potential NCAA sanctions against the program stemming from the widespread sign-stealing scandal orchestrated by Connor Stalions under Jim Harbaugh. However, the prominent broadcaster for FOX has some issues with the reported self-imposed suspension for current head coach Sherrone Moore.

Last week, it was reported that the Wolverines are suspending Moore for 2 games during the 2025 season. That suspension is allegedly related to a Level II infraction by Moore during the investigation into Stalions.

However, the 2 games that Moore will miss (and be unable to coach practices during game week) are the 3rd and 4th games of the season when the Wolverines are slated to face Central Michigan and Nebraska. That allows Moore to coach the season opener against New Mexico and a trip to Norman to face Oklahoma (Moore’s alma mater) in a major SEC road test for Michigan.

That format, according to Klatt, is particularly self-serving for Michigan:

“Choosing what games you are going to be suspended is on 2 fronts: trying to get ahead of this infractions meeting that’s going to take place in June, but it’s also — let’s be incredibly honest about it — it’s self-serving for Michigan. This benefits them,” Klatt claimed.

The other layer to Michigan’s timing of the suspension includes the fact that the team is likely to start true freshman Bryce Underwood at quarterback this fall. Instead of having Moore unavailable for the first 2 weeks of the season (including practices), the suspension allows Moore and Underwood to prepare together before the suspension hits.

“To try and get out in front of it is one thing. To get out in front of it to benefit you the most is another, which, obviously, trying to get your feet wet as a young head coach with a new quarterback, you don’t want to go through all of those gymnastics early in the year with this suspension,” explained Klatt.

“… Is that beneficial for Michigan? Obviously, yes, which is why they’re trying to do it this way.”
