Shubman Gill to lead India in England Tests
Rohit Sharma recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, and reportedly, his red-ball deputy, Jasprit Bumrah, is not in the mood to take over the leadership, hence, he has withdrawn from the race.
This leaves Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul as the candidates for the top job in Test cricket. As per various reports, the selection committee has zeroed in on Shubman Gill as the replacement for Rohit Sharma.
Gill has already had discussions with the coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and his appointment as the new India Test captain will be made official when the squad for the England tour is announced.
Notably, the India tour of England begins with the 1st Test at Headingley, Leeds, from June 20 to 24. After that, the 2nd Test will be played from July 2 to 6, the 3rd Test will take place at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, from July 10 to 14. Old Trafford in Manchester will host the 4th Test from July 23 to 27, while the 5th and final Test will be played at The Oval, London, from July 31 to August 4.
I believe that we still don't have replacements for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma - Sarandeep Singh
Along with Rohit, Kohli will be missing the Test series against England as he has also announced his retirement, and the Delhi coach Sarandeep Singh believes that India still have not got replacements for the duo.
"He was definitely one of the main players, so he had to play there. He was well-prepared this time he is going to perform well in England. Because he was the main player. He was the one who scored a 100 in Australia. Other than that, the game was not going well. So, there is always a little pressure on Virat. He was mentally prepared," Sarandeep Singh told ANI.
"It will definitely affect them. I believe that we still don't have replacements for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. They are one of the greats. And they will remain greats. Let's see who takes their place. The match-winning players who used to play, who had the passion to win the match. Their 14 years of career is not a small thing. To play in all three formats. To play in a good position is commendable. Now, the responsibility will increase on the youngsters. Let's see who the player is who can take the captaincy," he added.
