The spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel, Sheikh Muwaffaq Tarif, announced a halt to any interference or influence in the internal decisions of the Druze community in Syria, emphasizing the importance of preserving the unity of the country and its national identity.
In an official statement, Tarif noted that he is in constant communication with the sheikhs of the community in Syria to “ensure their well-being and provide assistance to them as much as possible, without intervening in their vision or influencing their internal decisions,” hoping that matters would head towards “the desired solutions.”
He stressed the necessity for the Druze community in Syria to maintain their identity and status within the unified homeland, adding, “We acknowledge that they are the owners of the cause and the rightful residents; they know best what serves their interests and are more knowledgeable than anyone regarding their priorities and decisions.”
He reiterated his commitment to support the members of the Druze community in Syria, stating that his position has been steadfast for years, arising from the principle of “holding on to the value of preserving brothers,” without interfering in “strategic issues, as they concern the community in Syria.”
Tarif recalled previous calls he had made to all components of Syrian society, urging the preservation of constitutional rights and advocating dialogue as a means to uplift Syria for the benefit of all its citizens and regions without exclusion, particularly the Druze community, which has played a significant role in the country’s history.
He also called on all Syrians to work together to rebuild and uplift Syria, warning against the “long arms of terrorism that seek to sow discord and undermine the Syrian social fabric.”
He highlighted the danger of misinformation circulating through social media, including false statements and rumors, calling for careful and responsible handling of such information, and to “refrain from taking positions or statements issued by unofficial figures or individuals who do not represent the community and its religious and social institutions.”
Tarif clarified that the stance of the Druze community in Palestine is to support and assist the community in Syria on both regional and international levels, alongside continuing to advocate for unity and solidarity in the face of challenges.
Muwaffaq Tarif’s statements came just hours after remarks by Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Sa’ar that Israel seeks “good relations” with the new government in Damascus.
About 60 Syrian Druze clerics crossed the ceasefire line in the Golan Heights into Israel on March 14, 2025, to meet Sheikh Muwaffaq Tarif, marking the first such visit in nearly 50 years.
Previously, Tarif had called on the Israeli army to intervene in Syria “to protect the Druze community in Syria,” in light of events in the areas of Jaramana and Sahnaya.
At the beginning of May, Tarif praised Israel’s actions in Syria, despite Druze condemnation of Israeli violations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that Tarif thanked him “for the decisive Israeli action in Syria.”
This position by Tarif comes at a time when Druze sheikhs in Syria reject any Israeli intervention in the country’s affairs under the pretext of “protecting them,” with leaders from the community and its references asserting that they are “part of a unified Syria,” emphasizing their rejection of “division or separation.”
Conversely, a faction supportive of the Sheikh, Hikmat al-Hijri, is calling for international protection, believing there is no issue with Israel.
