The Egyptian Foreign Ministry, through the Consulate General in New York on Monday received one of the largest collections of artifacts illegally smuggled out of Egypt.
The collection consists of 25 rare artifacts dating back to various eras of ancient Egyptian civilization.
The recovered collection includes stone and wooden coffin lids, funerary masks made of pottery and gilded wood, a large alabaster vessel, and a portrait of a woman from Fayum showcasing the mastery of realistic portraiture in the Greco-Roman era.
The collection also includes various pieces of jewelry made of various metals, a rare gold coin dating back to the era of Ptolemy I, and small bronze and stone statues depicting aspects of Egyptian belief and art from various historical periods.
This came within the directives of Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty to recover any and all Egyptian artifacts smuggled abroad.
Abdelatty participated in the procedures of the antiquities receipt committee, formed by his ministry and Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
He emphasized the importance Egypt attaches to the recovery of smuggled Egyptian antiquities and their return home.
Abdelatty noted the tireless efforts made by Egyptian embassies and consulates abroad, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Egyptian Public Prosecutor’s Office, and relevant state agencies, to recover Egypt’s artifacts.
The handover of the artifacts was the result of a joint effort between the Egyptian Consulate General in New York, the New York City District Attorney’s Office, and US security agencies, as well as lengthy negotiations with several individual collectors of these artifacts, with support from the Cultural Sector of the Foreign Ministry.
This effort was also the result of coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Public Prosecution, and all other relevant authorities in Egypt.
All Egyptian missions abroad continue to tirelessly ensure the return of Egyptian antiquities illegally exported from Egypt.
