The recent stabbing of rapper Tory Lanez at California's Tehachapi prison has raised significant concerns regarding inmate safety and the conditions within correctional facilities. On May 12, 2025, Lanez was reportedly attacked by another inmate, resulting in multiple stab wounds that necessitated his hospitalization . While initial reports indicate that his injuries are non-life-threatening, the incident has prompted an investigation by both the prison's investigative unit and the Kern County District Attorney's Office .
Tory Lanez was hospitalized on Monday after a fellow inmate at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi attacked the rapper at around 7:20 a.m. local time, a spokesperson for the prison told ABC News.
"Staff immediately responded, activated 911 and began medical aid. Peterson was subsequently transported to an outside medical facility for further treatment," the spokesperson said.
Lanez, legal name Daystar Peterson, is in stable condition after the inmate stabbed him with a self-made shank in a prison yard, a law enforcement source told The Times. The attack occurred around 7:20 a.m. in a housing unit at the California Correctional Institute in Tehachapi, and prison staff “immediately responded, activated 911 and began medical aid” to Peterson, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson Pedro Calderón Michel said in a statement. Peterson was rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
The attack happened around 07:20 local time (15:20 GMT), said Pedro Calderón Michel of the state's corrections department.
Prison staff began first aid before Lanez was taken to a local medical facility for further treatment, he said.
An investigation is underway into the stabbing, Mr Calderón Michela said . He did not comment on the attacker's motive.
While incarcerated for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, Lanez was involved in a violent incident. The unclear circumstances underscore persistent problems with prison violence and the handling of high-profile inmates. Authorities must address both the immediate consequences and the systemic issues that enable such incidents. The lack of transparency surrounding the altercation only fuels speculation and distrust. Was Lanez the aggressor, or was he targeted? Did the prison adequately protect him, given his celebrity and the potential for him to become a target? These are critical questions that demand honest answers. Beyond this specific case, the incident highlights the broader challenges facing correctional facilities: overcrowding, understaffing, and inadequate resources to address inmate mental health and safety. Meaningful reform requires a commitment to creating safer environments for both inmates and staff, and a willingness to confront the systemic failures that contribute to violence within prison walls.
