Max Allegri and surprise Premier League boss among top contenders to be next Manchester United manager

Massimiliano Allegri has emerged as the bookies’ favourite to become the next Manchester United manager.

It follows Ruben Amorim’s claim that he could leave the club next season if their poor form continues.

The Portuguese has only been in charge since November having replaced Erik ten Hag in the dugout.

But form in the league hasn’t improved with United slipping to 16th in the Premier League with a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham.

talkSPORT understands that Amorim’s superiors do not have any immediate plans to review the Portuguese’s position at the club.

However, Amorim’s ominous comments suggest that him leaving of his own accord cannot be ruled out.

Following their latest loss, Allegri is the favourite to be the next United boss with talkSPORT Bet.

The Italian is priced at 4/1 to succeed Amorim at Old Trafford if the current manager leaves the club.

Allegri has been out of work since leaving Juventus at the end of last season.

He won five Serie A titles across two spells with the Old Lady as well as another triumph during his time at AC Milan.

West Ham previously held talks with Allegri earlier this season before parting ways with Julen Lopetegui.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who has guided the Eagles to the FA Cup final, is the second favourite at 6/1.

Glasner has been in charge at Selhurst Park since February 2024 but has just a year remaining on his contract.

Palace are hopeful he will sign a new deal, though, amid interest from German club RB Leipzig in his services.

Mauricio Pochettino is also amongst the top contenders at 8/1, with Kieran McKenna and Gareth Southgate both at 10/1.

Amorim currently remains in charge at Old Trafford, having penned a deal through to 2027 just six months ago.

Speaking after the defeat to West Ham, he told the BBC: “Everybody here has to think seriously about a lot of things.

“Everybody is thinking about the [Europa League] final. The final is not the issue. We have bigger things to think about.

“I’m talking about myself and the culture in the club and the culture in the team. We need to change that. It’s a decisive moment in the history of the club.

“We need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave because we will not have a next season like this.

“If we start like this, if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different people.”

The loss sees United go 16th in the table with just two Premier League matches remaining this season.

Their current league position would represent a lowest finish since promotion back to the top-flight in 1975.

However, United will still feature in the Champions League next season if they beat Tottenham in the Europa League final on May 21.
