Big Lots is preparing for a big milestone in its retail history, celebrating the grand re-opening of over 100 stores this month.
In the eight months since the company first announced it would be closing all 800 of its locations, a few buyers stepped forward with interest in bringing back the beloved retailer and one of them is doing so with incredible speed.
As Men's Journal first reported a few weeks ago, a number of Big Lots locations were planned to re-open under Variety Wholesalers, who had agreed to purchase well over 200 stores in a number of states. Variety Wholesalers re-opened a little over 50 stores on May 1 and said another 78 would return to servicing communities beginning May 15. The final 87 stores it purchased are slated to open ahead of the summer season.

But now Parade has learned that in addition to the more than 70 Variety Wholesalers-owned Big Lots stores that will have opened by the end of this week alone, several more are operating under Ocean State Job Lot Company, as reported by Ocean County, New Jersey's WOBM radio station on Monday.
Mississippi, New Jersey and Tennessee have debuted a bulk of the newly returned locations so far, but a handful more can be found spreading across states like North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky with more planned for New York, Massachusetts and Vermont, among other states.
Those re-opened under the Rhode Island-based discount retailer Ocean State Job Lot Company include three locations in the southeast-most part of New Jersey:
580 N Main Street, Barnegat, N.J.3845 Bayshore Road, Cape May, N.J.257 W New Road, Somers Point, N.J.It also announced earlier this spring that it plans to open more stores in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont.
By May 15, Variety Wholesalers will be operating Big Lots stores across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, according to a May 10 article published by USA Today, which also confirmed that even more stores are planning grand openings for June.
Storefronts now open and operating under Variety Wholesalers include:
1342 Indian Mound Drive, Mount Sterling, Ky.755 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, Metairie, La.2605 West Main Street, Tupelo, Miss.5778 Highway 80 E, Pearl, Miss.1432 E Dixie Drive, Asheboro, N.C.1041 South Riverside Drive, Clarksville, Tenn.744 Nashville Pike, Gallatin, Tenn.220 Dickson Plaza Drive, Dickson, Tenn.2911 Hershberger Road NW, Roanoke, Va.But that's not it for Big Lots. Earlier this year, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet said it would be buying an additional 40 former Big Lots store locations from the Gordon Brothers, acquiring a total of 63 stores from the retailer since October 2024.
All in all, this is great news for fans, who were admittedly torn up over the store closing sales and initial bankruptcy news.
