Developments over the weekend in Germany and Italy could see Cesc Fabregas ending up at Bayer Leverkusen next season.
The Arsenal great now appears to be heading to the 2023/24 German champions despite Erik ten Hag previously looking like the favourite.
Leverkusen have a vacancy in the dugout for next season after Xabi Alonso announced his departure ahead of an expected switch to Real Madrid.
Under sporting director Simon Rolfes, the Bundesliga side have been swift in squad planning, and he had already been bombarded with questions about Ten Hag, who was sacked by Manchester United in November.
Yet as talkSPORT’s European football expert Andy Brassell explained, things have changed rapidly on the continent.
“We’ve seen a couple of things change over the weekend,” he explained.
“We were already boiled down to the last two candidates they really wanted, Cesc Fabregas and Erik ten Hag, who’s got a great reputation in Germany from his time at Bayern Munich’s second team.
“What has changed this weekend is that Leipzig, one of the other teams interested in Fabregas, are no longer able to make the Champions League.
“That is a massive deal if we’re talking about him leaving Como behind, where he’s a minor shareholder so very invested in the project.
“The other thing was what he said after the win, ‘whatever happens, it’s been brilliant and I’ve put my heart and soul into it’ you don’t say that if you’re staying, it’s just that simple.”
Brassell added: “Also he’s known to have privately said to people close to him in recent days that there are only two choices, go to Leverkusen or stay at Como.
“That means that Leipzig, Milan, Roma, all the other teams that have shown interest, are out of the running.”
Ten Hag earlier looked like the favourite for LeverkusenGettyFabregas made the surprise comments about his future following a 3-1 home win over Cagliari at the weekend.
The victory was his side’s sixth on the bounce, leaving them tenth in the table in their first season back in Serie A.
Speaking afterwards, the two-time Premier League winner surprised the media an attendance by appearing to allude to a goodbye.
“Whatever happens, I will be grateful to this club. I am very proud of what is happening in Como,” he said.
“I want to leave an important legacy. The important thing is that whoever comes after me finds a great club with very well-prepared players and a spectacular work culture.
“I want to leave this to Como and then continue to be very happy and connected to everyone.”
Comments from Alonso also were interpreted as Fabregas being his replacement, given that they are former Spain teammates who played and now coach a similar style of football.
Asked about his replacement, Alonso said: “There are very intelligent and very well-prepared people at the club who will follow the same path they have taken so far.”
