The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is all set to resume after the suspension due to the tensions between India and Pakistan. The league reportedly will start again this week as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen to start it as soon as possible.
The IPL 2025 was suspended with immediate effect after the game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals got called off midway at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Keeping in mind the tensions, the governing body decided to postpone the league with immediate effect for one week.
This made overseas players tense as well, and they quickly went back home, especially with a lot of drones, missiles, and firing attacks by Pakistan. However, the two nations recently agreed to the ceasefire, and hence, it made BCCI consider resuming IPL 2025 as quickly as possible.
As per the reports in RevSportz, the IPL 2025 is all set to begin from May 17 or 18, if things go to plan. It is learned that the BCCI will be planning to keep more double-headers for the remaining 12 group league matches so that they make up for the lost time due to the cross-border tensions.
Overseas players might not return for IPL 2025
There were also reports that BCCI has informally told all the franchises to call back their foreign players by Tuesday. But, there have been learnings that several overseas players are against coming back to India for the rest of the games in the league due to international commitments and personal reasons as well.
The reports in RevSportz suggested that one overseas batter of Royal Challengers Bengaluru has already informed his franchise that he is unlikely to return. Also, Josh Hazlewood is expected to miss the league due to the shoulder niggle, and some other franchises might also face the same problems.
However, if the overseas players didn't agree to return, then BCCI is unlikely to take any action against them as this is a force majeure. A force majeure is a contractual clause that excuses individuals/parties from fulfilling their contracts in case of an extraordinary event that is beyond their control.
This is a force majeure, an unforeseen event which is beyond anyone’s control - CEO
Talking about overseas players not coming back, the CEO confirmed that they will not push anyone and will leave the decision to them, as it is a force majeure. Speaking to RevSportz, he said:
“We will not push anyone and will leave it to them,” said the CEO. “Yes, this is a force majeure, an unforeseen event which is beyond anyone’s control.”
Notably, ahead of the IPL 2025, the BCCI made a strong statement related to foreign players withdrawing from the tournament after getting picked in an auction. The governing body stated that if such things happen, then the player will be banned for two seasons.
It happened with Delhi Capitals batter Harry Brook, bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs 6.25 crore at the mega auction, was handed a two-year ban after he pulled out of this year’s tournament.
