‘Violent attacks’ – LaLiga stars forced to spent night at training ground after ‘invasion’ from furious fans

Sevilla’s first team squad were forced to spend the night at the training centre amid attacks from supporters.

The LaLiga side fell 3-2 to Celta Vigo on Saturday night to keep them six points above the relegation zone and supporters awaited their team’s return to the south of Spain.

Shocking images showed fans kicking and knocking down a gate outside the training complex, attacks which have now been ‘strongly condemned’ by the club in a statement.

In it they said: “Sevilla FC understands that the team’s sporting situation, which is not what any Sevilla fan wants, may lead to protests, but under no circumstances will they be tolerated if they are accompanied by aggression, threats, or acts of vandalism.

“Likewise, it will pursue the public naming of employees and the dissemination of private data on social media and in the media, acts that constitute criminal offenses.

“Sevilla FC will report to the relevant authorities the unusual violent attacks on its employees, players, technical staff, and management upon their arrival at the training complex. These attacks forced the Sevilla first team to spend the night at the facilities.

“Sevilla FC requests that the Security Forces and Corps exercise the utmost diligence to locate those responsible for these despicable acts, perpetrated by a gang of organised radicals who acted with extreme violence.

“Of course, it will report to the relevant authorities the attack on its facilities, as well as the acts of vandalism that occurred in the first team area, which even ended with the invasion of the aforementioned first team area by a large group of violent individuals.

“Beyond the complaints, Sevilla FC is committed to doing everything in its power to assist in the pursuit of the perpetrators of these crimes.

“It will try to help identify those involved in these actions and will act relentlessly in the event that they are Sevilla FC fans and members.

“Finally, Sevilla FC expresses its absolute condemnation of any protest that involves violence and criminal acts like those seen this Saturday, May 10.

“The club is certain that these actions do not represent the Sevilla fans, who are also aware of the significance of Tuesday’s match against UD Las Palmas at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.”

The record seven-time Europa League winners are likely safe from relegation, but could still go down with a six-point gap to the bottom three with nine to play.

In fact, 19th-placed Leganes have a game in hand, and could make that gap four points with a home win over Espanyol.

Outside of Alaves, the entire bottom five are in dire form, with Sevilla on an eight-game winless streak.

Such form has been unprecedented in recent years, with the team finishing in LaLiga’s top ten since their promotion in 2001 through to the 2021/22 season.

However, the past two campaigns have seen bottom half finishes amid financial turmoil and ownership in-fighting.

Another bottom half season is looking very likely this campaign, particularly as their form doesn’t seem to be arresting even with a coaching change.

Francisco Garcia Pimienta was brought in last summer from Las Palmas, but was sacked early on April 13 amid a four-game losing run.

Veteran Joaquin Caparros, who got the team promoted in 2001, was parachuted in for his third caretaker stint in the last seven years, but no new manager bounce has appeared.

He’s stopped the losing run, but has picked up just two points in four games.
