Rohit’s decision to retire just before the England series has left BCCI in a lurch. The board has now raced against time to zero in on Gill as the new captain. Reports also suggested that the selectors wanted to make Virat Kohli the captain.

However, the former captain has reportedly communicated to the BCCI that he intends to retire from Tests. The BCCI has asked Kohli to reconsider his decision but the latter is yet to revert to the board.

Gill will be leading the Test team for the first time in England. Earlier, reports suggested that the BCCI wasn’t keen in giving Bumrah any leadership responsibilities. The pacer served as the stand-in captain during Rohit’s absence in two matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, Bumrah is unlikely to play all five Tests in England and hence the selectors do not want to give him vice-captaincy either.
