Dos Santos has four saves for SDFC, which wins second straight

Milan Iloski scored a goal for the second consecutive game, Anders Dreyer added another as San Diego FC enjoyed a 2-1 win over St. Louis City Saturday.

CJ dos Santos had four saves for San Diego.

Iloski replaced Onni Valakari in the 69th minute and then opened the scoring in the 79th, blasting a shot from the edge of the area inside the left post.

The forward called it “a good chance. It was a tight angle, so it wasn’t the easiest chance,” but he was keenly aware of its importance.

“It’s a big moment in that time, still being 0-0,” he said.

San Diego (6-4-2) has won back-to-back games. It’s last victory, 5-0 over Dallas, snapped a three-game losing streak in which the club allowed three goals each match.

SDFC remains in fourth place in the Western Conference with 20 points. Vancouver leads with 26 points.

St. Louis City (2-6-4) is without a win in eight consecutive games, including six losses, and has been shut out four times in that span.

Dreyer scored in the 87th, capitalizing on a St. Louis turnover. His sharp left-footed strike, from a tight angle near the end line on the left side of the pitch, threaded the ball between goalkeeper Ben Lundt, the post, and the end line to find the back of the net and make it 2-1.

Kyle Hiebert scored for St. Louis in the first minute of stoppage time.

Head coach Mikey Varas said “the first half was a big struggle,” but liked how his club responded for the win.

“I think that the guys did a good job in terms of exploiting the space with diagonal balls and be in between their wingers, their wing backs, in their side center backs to our wingers in the second half, and that helped a lot,” he said. “And then our counter press was way more organized and aggressive in the second half.”

It was the second meeting between SDFC and St. Louis. The clubs played to a scoreless draw during SDFC’s home inaugural match on March 1.

After Dreyer’s game-winning goal, SDFC is currently the only team in MLS to have multiple players with at least 10 goal contributions (Dreyer and Lozano).

Next up, SDFC will host back-to-back matches in a span of four days at Snapdragon Stadium against the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday and Sporting Kansas City on May 17.
