AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Sunday, the Austin Police Department provided additional details surrounding a north Austin shooting that involved officers.
The shooting occurred at approximately 12:40 a.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of East Braker Lane.
According to APD, the two officers involved were placed on administrative leave, per protocol.
The officers were identified as Officer Jake Pitcher, who had been with APD for 1 year and 7 months at the time of the incident, and Officer Ryne Kirchberg, who had been with APD for 4 years and 6 months.
PREVIOUS COVERAGE: APD: 1 injured in shooting involving officersAccording to APD, the officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to use a turn signal. A woman, man and child were inside the vehicle at the time.
The officer asked the man, later identified as 26-year-old Branson Berreles, to step out of the vehicle after he said he did not have identification.
As the officer attempted to pat Berreles down for weapons, he pushed past the officer and attempted to run away.
“When Officer Kirchberg reached for him, he turned, pulled away, and began reaching towards his right hip area at his waistband. Next, he turned sideways in a defensive or ‘bladed’ stance, and attempted to retrieve a firearm from his waistband,” APD said.

APD said backup officers arrived, and Berreles was restrained before officers began performing life-saving measures.
“Officers searched Mr. Berreles and located a firearm in the area where he had been reaching,” APD said. “Officers also located multiple magazines on his person.”
According to APD, Berreles was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he remains in critical condition.
“No other individuals, including the female driver, the young child, or the officers, were injured in the incident,” APD said.
APD said the charges against Berreles were pending, and the specific charges remain under investigation.
The incident was captured on officers' body-worn cameras, and the department released redacted footage, as well as the police audio from the incident.
“Body-worn camera videos do not always capture everything the officer or witnesses saw or experienced during the incident; however, the footage helps us understand what occurred,” APD said.
As of Sunday, APD said the details provided were preliminary, and the investigation remained ongoing.
