Derek Carr announces emotional NFL retirement – but is already prepared for unique new business career

Derek Carr has confirmed his shock retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons.

The New Orleans Saints announced on Saturday that the quarterback will step away as he is dealing with a shoulder injury that would require surgery and ‘jeopardize the entire 2025 season’.

“In late March, while ramping up his preparation, Derek experienced pain in his right shoulder,” a statement from the team read.

“It was his first time throwing a football at significant volume since recovering from both a concussion and left hand injury sustained during play on December 8, 2024. Derek immediately contacted the Saints Medical Team.

“Eventually, medical scans determined objectively that Derek sustained a labral tear and also had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff.

“Since that time, Derek, his representation, the Saints Medical Team and outside medical experts have worked together to determine the best path forward.

“Surgery was an option, jeopardizing the entire 2025 season, yet there was no guarantee Derek would return to the level of strength, function and performance of play to which he was accustomed.”

Carr, 34, who played his first nine NFL seasons for the Raiders franchise and the last two campaigns in New Orleans, confirmed his decision to retire in his own emotional message to fans.

“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” he shared.

“For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.

“It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”

During his time with Raiders, Carr made four Pro Bowls and became one of the franchise’s favorite signal-callers.

Following the 2022 season, Las Vegas parted ways with the former second-round pick, after a disappointing campaign that saw him make his final Pro Bowl appearance.

He departed as the franchise’s all-time leader in completions (3,201), passing touchdowns (217) and passing yards (35,222).

In his two seasons with the Saints, Carr had a 14-13 record, throwing for 6,023 yards, 40 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

His final year in New Orleans was cut short to ten games as he battled multiple injuries, and he recently fired back at the media for speculation over his health.

The QB was also slammed by fans over his $51.5million salary stalemate back in January.

While Carr’s decision to step away from the NFL caught many fans off guard, he is already prepared for life after football, and a rather unique business venture could await.

Derek and his older brother David, also a former quarterback who was the first overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft, are ‘significant investors’ in frozen dessert company Frönen.

The ice cream-like dessert is free of gluten, dairy, soy and seed oil and gums, and was co-founded at the University of Chicago in 2018 by Jessica Gartenstein, who suffers from celiac disease.

Her partner, Erik Nadeau, introduced her to his grandmother’s fruit-based recipes, and the rest is history.

According to Forbes, pints of Frönen now come in ten flavors, and the brand is available at 1,700 grocers.

It caught the eye of Derek’s wife, Heather, a few months ago, and the Carr’s have since fallen in love with the dessert.

Healthy food is also very important to David’s wife, Melody, because he and three of their five children have Type 1 diabetes.

“Our whole family loves it. It’s simple, delicious, and made with ingredients we can pronounce,” Derek said of the dessert.

Once his brother was also introduced, Heather reached out to the company via Instagram, and a partnership between the Carrs and Frönen ‘quickly came together’ in April.

“We all just clicked,” Frönen president Brian McDermott said, per Forbes.

The families are now ambassadors for the product, while David and Derek are said to have a ‘meaningful stake’ in the business, according to Frönen CEO George Ho.

“This partnership with the Carrs is going to take Frönen to yet another level,” Ho added earlier this month.

As Derek steps away from the NFL, he will have more time to concentrate on his post-retirement business ventures, and that could include taking on a bigger role with Frönen.

Carr leaves a Saints QB room that is currently filled by 2025 second-round draft pick Tyler Shough, last year’s fourth-round selection Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener.
