The San Diego Humane Society took in an “extraordinary” 267 animals in a 24-hour period ending Thursday evening.
“It’s been an extraordinary day at San Diego Humane Society,” the nonprofit agency said in an email to media contacts. “In just 24 hours, at least 267 animals entered our care across multiple campuses — a testament to the urgent need for animal services in our region and beyond.”
The animals included 96 guinea pigs dropped off in Escondido, 50 chicks in a package mailed to the Logan Heights Post Office and — from an overwhelmed Los Angeles shelter — 11 adult cats, 28 kittens and 5 dogs.
Along with the standard intake of strays and owner surrenders, the total for the day came to 267.
The agency said all of the animals will receive medical and behavioral evaluations before becoming available for adoption.
