Your mum – sure she appreciates flowers, candy and brunch. But this San Diego weekend, take her (or your fave mom surrogate) out for some fun too. There’s film, music – including a show by a pop icon with a heart – and lots of activities for youngsters too.
The Gator by the Bay Festival continues at 4 p.m. Friday at Spanish Landing Park with more than 100 zydeco and blues acts on seven stages. But that’s not all. If you like seafood Cajun-style, the fest is the place to satisfy your appetite. The highlight? Five tons of fresh crawfish trucked straight from the source, Louisiana. The fest, with a lineup that includes San Diego Music Award winners Kimmi Bitter, the Farmers and Whitney Shay, continues through Sunday. Single-day admission starts at $78 and a three-day pass at $232.
Elton John is one of the superstars of pop music. His retirement tour ended two years ago, yet he’s still picking up a show here and there. One of those rare appearances is at Petco Park Friday, when he’ll perform at a benefit concert for San Diego’s Curebound, which supports adult and pediatric cancer research. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show start at $43.
The GI Film Festival San Diego concludes Friday at the Museum of Photographic Arts, now part of Balboa Park’s San Diego Museum of Art. The slate includes films that explore military experiences from long ago, up through the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Friday includes a 5 p.m. screening of Rohna Classified, about the long coverup of a World War II-era tragedy, and a narrative block of shorts focusing on diverse voices. Admission costs $15, but it’s $10 for military and veterans.
The Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park is making a statement by carrying on with Saturday’s “A Celebration of Science” despite, as officials announced, losing $3.8 million in federal grants in the wave of cuts that followed President Donald Trump taking office. Admission had been set to be free; instead it will be $5 on Saturday. The 10 a.m. event includes hands-on STEM activities, over 100 interactive exhibits and lessons about animals along our coast, including hourly screenings of the film, “Flight of the Butterflies.”
The Lego Festival, at Legoland California Resort in Carlsbad, continues this weekend with zones for children based on all manner of interests, from building and gaming to music and dancing. Littles can see “bands” made of the famed bricks or step up and contribute to the building of a “fantastical city.” Admission starts at $99 this weekend for the park and fest, which is available on weekends through June 8.
