Truist Championship 2025 LIVE: Round 2 tee times, groupings, leaderboard and how to follow as McIlroy defends title at new venue

Rory McIlroy returns to individual competition for the first time since winning The Masters this week at the Truist Championship.

The Northern Irishman completed the career Grand Slam at Augusta, and he has only appeared in the Zurich Classic alongside Shane Lowry since.

But he’s now back and is headlining the field at the Truist Championship which was previously known as the Wells Fargo.

McIlroy has won this event four times, including last year when he swept his rivals aside, winning by 5 strokes.

He claimed all of his victories at Quail Hollow, but the venue has changed due to it hosting the PGA Championship next week.

It means the Philadelphia Cricket Club is playing host to a field also including Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas.

Truist Championship: Date and how to follow

Other big names playing in north Philadelphia include former winners Max Homa, Wyndham Clark and Jason Day.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is not playing this week after choosing to feature in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson instead, winning that event.

Keith Mitchell is the leader after Round 1, carding an opening 61 to sit at 9-under-par, one ahead of Denny McCarthy.

Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, Sepp Straka and Akshay Bhatia all made impressive starts too while McIlroy is five shots off the lead after his opening 66.

Truist Championship: What has been said?

McIlroy admitted he felt ‘a little rusty’ as he opened his Truist Championship title defence.

McIlroy littered six birdies with a couple of dropped shots on the back nine as he began his build-up for next week’s PGA Championship.

“I was a little rusty out there, just hadn’t played in a week and I hadn’t really done a ton of practice,” said McIlroy.

“I drove the ball pretty well. I certainly can tidy a few things up, but overall a decent day.”

He added: “I don’t want to diminish this tournament and this championship, but to me, with everything that’s happened over the past couple of weeks, this was always going to be a great prep week for me to see where my game was and sort of refine a few things.

“I still want to play well, and I still want to have a chance to win the tournament, but I’ll have a much better gauge of where my game is going into next week after these four days than I would have had if I hadn’t had played or if I just spent the week at home practising. It’s an important week for me.

“Hopefully in two weeks’ time you’re talking about me being a six-time major champion instead of a five-time major champion.”
