It wasn’t a perfect afternoon for Menlo-Atherton’s Jimmy Zaharias. But it was close enough.
The Bears’ senior drilled a walk-off double to center field in the bottom of the seventh that scored two runs, giving Menlo-Atherton a 4-3 win Wednesday over Burlingame in a Peninsula Athletic League Bay contest. Zaharias was also the winning pitcher, working the sixth and seventh innings.
The victory keeps Menlo-Atherton, ranked 16th in the Bay Area News Group top 20, a game and a half ahead of Capuchino in the tight Bay Division race. The Bears are 9-2 in league play and 17-7 overall. Capuchino improved to 8-4, 16-9 after beating Sequoia 9-4 in 10 innings.
The Bears and Burlingame (10-13, 4-8) were deadlocked 2-2 when Zaharias took over in the sixth as the third pitcher of the afternoon. A walk, a balk, an error by Zaharias and a sacrifice fly by Roberto Beltranena put the Panthers on top 3-2.
But Zaharias retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, then lashed his game-winning two-bagger in the bottom of the inning, driving home pinch-runner JT Anderson and Ryder Kelly, who reached base on an error.
Zaharias is having a pretty good season overall. He leads the Bears with 20 RBI and is the co-leader in doubles with eight. On the mound he is 2-1 with two saves.
Kelly also had a big afternoon. He doubled and singled, scored two runs and had an RBI.
Capuchino 9, Sequoia 4, 10 innings
After allowing Sequoia to tie the game at 4-4 with the two runs in the sixth, the visitors erupted for five runs in the 10th.
University of La Verne commit Lucas Zayac broke the tie with a two-run single, then the next batter, Anakin Manuel, homered to left. Just like that, it was 9-4 Capuchino.
With only two games left in the regular season, the Mustangs will likely need to win both games to catch PAL Bay leader Menlo-Atherton, which has a game and a half lead in the division. Capuchino and M-A have already played twice this season, splitting the two games.
