ESPN reportedly floats additional compensation to SEC for 9th conference game

ESPN is reportedly flashing significant additional compensation the SEC’s way in hopes of adding a 9th conference game to the college football schedule.

Of course, this is not the only factor the SEC has to consider, but as the old saying goes: Money Talks. This report, which stems from The Athletic, insists that the additional compensation for adding a 9th SEC game would be from $50-80 million.

As it currently stands, and as you math whizzes already know, the SEC plays 8 conference games with 4 non-conference matchups – most or not all of which are usually filled by G5 or FCS opponents.

With how tough it is to make the College Football Playoff – especially while facing an SEC-caliber schedule – there is simply no upside for programs like Georgia, Alabama or Clemson to schedule matchups against strong power conference opponents. Why would Tennessee risk a loss to Ohio State or Penn State when ETSU provides an easy win?

Some schools, if they’re brave, will schedule a mid-tier Power conference program to try and get the best of both worlds. Alabama is another good example for this, as they’ll play Florida State and Wisconsin in 2025.
