Chester racing tips

2.35 Chester – Calla Lagoon @ 9/1

This New Bay colt, CALLA LAGOON, showed plenty of promise as a two-year-old, winning on his second start at Ascot. 

There would have been plenty of excuses had he not won that day, as he was caught behind a couple of horses and had to sit and wait for a gap. When the opening came, he quickened impressively and powered home, getting the better of Seaplane, who has since gone on to finish fourth in a Group 1.

Calla Lagoon only managed second on his next start after that, but he stayed on strongly once again and looks the type to improve as he steps up in trip.

O’Brien has an excellent record in this race, but his main runner, Mount Kilimanjaro, was very disappointing on his seasonal reappearance at Dundalk, where he was a well-beaten 1/4 favourite.

3.05 Chester – Illinois @ 5/4

Six go to post in this year’s Ormonde Stakes, and among them is Willie Mullins’s Absurde. He brings some strong flat form to the table, having won the 2023 Ebor and finished fifth in last year’s Melbourne Cup. He also landed a Listed race here last summer, but that contest wasn’t as strong as this, and he may find one or two too good on the day.

ILLINOIS was a classy performer for Aidan O’Brien last season, winning a Group 2 at Ascot and only narrowly beaten in the St Leger by stablemate Jan Brueghel. O’Brien has an excellent record at this meeting, having won this race three times in the last ten years.

Illinois is yet to run this season, so he may not be at his absolute peak, but he should still be good enough to win this.

3.40 Chester – High On Hope @ 8/1

HIGH ON HOPE has run consistently well without winning this season, recording two seconds and a third. 

He might have done a bit better last time out when finishing third, but a stumble very early on cost him a better position. He eventually came home three and a half lengths behind Sex On Fire, who reopposes on Thursday.

He’s 3lb better off with that rival now and also benefits from a further 5lb claim from Warren Fentiman. Fentiman rode several winners over the winter and has proven himself to be a capable apprentice who is well worth his claim.

Tom Dascombe typically does well at Chester and often finds a winner or two at this May meeting.
