On a day when the Padres got good news about Yu Darvish, more positive things seemed to be happening with Dylan Cease on the mound Wednesday night.
But Cease’s fortunes took a turn quickly as he lost a no-hitter in the seventh inning, then almost immediately left the game – the Friars ultimately fell to the Yankees, 4-3 – due to a cramp in his pitching arm.
Cease, up 1-0, had handcuffed New York to that point, striking out Aaron Judge three times, but Cody Bellinger homered into the second deck in right field on an 0-2 fastball clocked at 98 mph with one out in the seventh.
He then struck out Anthony Volpe and got ahead 1-2 in the count against Jasson Domínguez before manager Mike Shildt and a trainer went to the mound.
Cease – who pitched the second no-hitter in San Diego history last July against the Nationals – nodded his head repeatedly during their discussion and ultimately walked off the field and into the dugout.
Shildt had good news after the game, describing the training staff as “not overly concerned” over Cease’s cramp. “We’ll evaluate it and see what happens,” he added.

The 3-1 lead didn’t hold though, thanks to a familiar face – Trent Grisham.
The former Padre stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter and tied it up 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer off Jason Adam.
So the teams went to extras with a series win on the line – the Padres won the opener, 4-3, and got pounded Tuesday, 12-3 – and the Friars loaded the bases. But with two outs, reliever Devin Williams (1-2) struck out Bogaerts with a full-count changeup.
That opened the door for pinch-hitter J.C. Escarra, who came through with a long sacrifice fly to left off Jeremiah Estrada (1-2) in the bottom of the 10th to drive in Domínguez and give the Yankees the win.
Meanwhile, Darvish is scheduled to face hitters Thursday for the first time in his recovery from right elbow inflammation.
“It’s a substantial step,” Shildt said before the final game of three-game series at Yankee Stadium.
In addition, second baseman Jake Cronenworth, recovering from a fractured rib, is expected back Friday, three days after center fielder Merrill returned from the injured list and went 2 for 4 with a double against New York.
Following a day off Thursday, Randy Vásquez (1-3, 3.90 ERA) gets the start Friday when the Friars open the final series in their nine-game road trip in Colorado.
