Rockies’ Kris Bryant will undergo ablation procedure on lower back

Kris Bryant’s search for a solution is taking him to Los Angeles.

The Rockies’ oft-injured designated hitter is scheduled to undergo an ablation on his lower back in L.A. on Thursday, hoping the procedure will help him get back on the field. Bryant, 33, has been on the injured list since April 13 with what the club calls “lumbar degenerative disc disease.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, nerve ablation is a procedure that destroys nerves in an area of pain. Destroying the nerves helps reduce or stop pain signals. It can sometimes help relieve long-term pain.

“It’s a pretty minimally invasive procedure,” manager Bud Black said Wednesday before the Rockies opened a three-game series vs. the Tigers at Coors Field. “The doctors say it should alleviate some of the discomfort. He should be back in a day or two, resuming activities.”

Bryant, however, is not close to getting back on the field.

The Rockies’ highest-paid player said last month that he’s not considering retiring even though he’s spent more time on the injured list than on the playing field since signing a seven-year, $182 million contract ahead of the 2022 season. Bryant has played in just 170 games across his four seasons in Colorado, with only 17 homers and a -1.6 total WAR.

“I want to be on the field. I want to play the game,” Bryant said. “I want to talk to doctors, see if there’s anything else we can do. But I’m not gonna give up.”

Marquez’s struggles. Veteran right-hander German Marquez’s stats are ugly; there’s no avoiding that reality. He’s 0-6 with a 9.90 ERA and a 1.967 WHIP after seven starts. Opponents are hitting .362 against him, and his 5.4 strikeouts per nine innings are a career low.

Black said recently that Marquez, “was still shaking off the rust.”

Marquez took the loss Sunday in Colorado’s 9-3 defeat at San Francisco. His line was messy: five runs allowed on six hits (including two home runs) over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

Black said he saw incremental improvements.

“I thought he threw better, I thought his breaking pitches were better,” Black said. “German needs to improve on the quality and the consistency of the curveball and the slider. The fastball has the velocity, and it was moving in San Francisco. The curveball was better, but the slider is not quite there yet.”

Marquez, Colorado’s workhorse for six seasons and an All-Star in 2021, suffered an elbow injury four starts into the 2023 season and underwent Tommy John surgery. He returned to the rotation last July, but his comeback lasted just four innings because of a stress reaction in his elbow. The Rockies shut him down for the rest of the season.

Injury updates. Several key players, including Gold Glove shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, are making steady progress as they work toward a return from injuries.

Tovar, on the IL since April 16 with a left hip contusion, took batting practice on the field Wednesday and was scheduled to run the bases for the first time since the injury on Thursday.

“Tovar is getting better … he’s making steady progress,” Black said.
