Suns GM Brian Gregory: Next head coach needs to understand physicality in modern NBA

“Alignment” was the word of the day when the Phoenix Suns introduced new general manager Brian Gregory on Tuesday.

But with front office roles seemingly in order, there’s one large piece that still needs to align with the brain trust: a head coach.

“Obviously, my main focus right now is hiring the next head coach of the Phoenix Suns and hiring a great one,” Gregory told reporters at his introductory press conference. “We are doing an extensive process in that right now. I’m not going to give a timetable ’cause I want to make sure that we get this right.

“This is very, very critical for us moving forward, finding that head coach that is aligned.”

The first-time GM said he was looking for a coach who buys into the physicality that’s been apparent in these playoffs and dating back to a memo sent out to referees at the 2024 All-Star break.

“Unbelievable basketball IQ, a tremendous communicator, shares our vision and what we understand needs to be done to be successful in this new NBA,” Gregory said.

“The toughness, the physicality … and has the ability to hold the players accountable to doing that.”

The last note fits like a glove after the reporting that said Mike Budenholzer was met with a negative response when he had asked Bradley Beal to play more like Jrue Holiday. Not to mention an apparent rift created when Budenholzer reportedly asked star Devin Booker to tone down his vocal leadership.

Gregory said he also wants the hire to coach to that identity and reinforce principles of relentless work ethic and urgency. They need to become daily habits, he added.

Input will also be gathered from Booker and the other players on what makes a good coach, suggesting the formula may have changed since Booker first entered the league in 2015.

“So with that, we’re going to make sure we cast a wide net on that, and at the same time, evaluate and interview coaches from a diverse background with diverse experiences and so forth,” Gregory said. “And I think that will put us in a good position in that.”
