‘It’s disgusting’ – Canelo Alvarez sent Dana White warning over shocking record ahead of $150m Terence Crawford fight

Rolly Romero believes Canelo Alvarez’s approach to boxing is ‘disgusting’ and says UFC CEO Dana White won’t tolerate it.

Canelo is gearing up for a mega-fight with Terence Crawford in September, which, according to reports, will reward the Mexican superstar with a huge $150million.

The fight was announced after Canelo defeated Cuba’s William Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this past weekend, with the country’s boxing chief Turki Alalshikh confirming White as co-promoter for the Las Vegas spectacle.

Canelo became a two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion by overcoming Scull via unanimous decision, but the event was overshadowed by the lacklustre performances of both men.

In fact, the bout set a new record for the fewest punches thrown in a 12-round fight, with just 445 punches — Canelo with 152 and Scull 293 — thrown over the distance.

The night before, Romero upset Ryan Garcia in Times Square and they combined to throw only 490 punches over 12 rounds.

Also on that New York card, Devin Haney narrowly got past Jose Ramirez, with the pair letting 503 punches fly.

Those three fights are now ranked No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 on the list of 12-round bouts with the fewest punches, and in a scathing review of his fellow pugilists, Romero believes there’s more than meets the eye than just the stats.

“Those were two horrible, horrible [fights],” he said on The Danza Project, referring to Canelo vs Scull and Haney vs Ramirez.

“I couldn’t even watch the Devin fight. I was warming up in the back, and I didn’t want to fall asleep on the f***ing way to the ring.

“The problem with these guys is they don’t have the will to win, or at least to win decisively like that, because they already have fights lined up after.

“When you’re overpaying fighters and telling them, ‘No matter what happens, whether you win or lose, you’re still going to fight.’ You just take away their whole will.

“These guys are just doing it for the cheque. These people, they’re all fighting—Canelo is included in this now too—for the next cheque.

“They’re not fighting to be champion, they’re not fighting to win. They’re fighting for the damn cheque, and it’s f***ing disgusting and destroying the sport.”

Garcia had been promised a huge rematch with Haney before his defeat with Romero, as the pair’s first fight was overturned when the former tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Canelo, meanwhile, signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season in February, with the contract said to be worth in the region of around $400million.

Crawford was always going to be next for Canelo; hence, Romero believes that most elite fighters are losing motivation to put on convincing performances.

“In the UFC, if you’re not fighting to win, Dana White cuts your f***ing a** out,” he added.

“He says, ‘You’re not fighting on this [promotion].’ He’ll give you one chance but still if you ain’t fighting to win, Dana don’t f**k with that.”

White is notoriously cutthroat in business, and although MMA fans are nervous about him switching between the sports, those involved in boxing are excited to see what the 55-year-old can do.

Back in March, White and Alalshikh announced that a deal had been reached to begin their new ground-breaking boxing promotion.

TKO Holdings, owners of the UFC and wrestling promotion, WWE, are behind the new league.

It is launching this year and is a historic change for the sport, as the age-old traditions continue to be challenged.

The promotion will see just one champion crowned in each weight division, compared to the four main sanctioning bodies—WBA, WBO, WBC and IBF—currently involved in boxing.
