Economy, security don’t excuse Trump’s actions
In his April 30 Tribune editorial, Judge Kulp categorized me as “small-minded.” Nonetheless, I am compelled to respond.
Why? Because I absolutely regard assaulting women as “distasteful, disgusting, and offensive” (quoting Mr. Kulp). Donald Trump bragged about his sexual conquests with language too vulgar for print; however, his boasting can be electronically accessed with “When you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything.” His history of assaulting women and engaging in extramarital affairs is well-documented.
Mr. Kulp contended that such actions should be excused because of our country’s economic health and security. I disagree with that implication. Sexual assault is no minor, excusable offense.
I also remind readers that many Americans are experiencing insecurity at multiple levels. They worry about the economy. They worry because unidentified operatives with no security clearances have access to their personal information. They worry about healthcare. They worry about sensitive national intelligence being flippantly discussed on compromised platforms. They worry about being falsely accused and deprived of due process. They worry because their Constitutional rights — including freedom of speech — are in jeopardy. They worry about the future of our democracy.
Mr. Kulp described Donald Trump as “compassionate, congenial, unbelievably energetic, intelligent on a scale unmatched and a man who, far from going to Washington to get rich like most of the politicians there, was already rich far beyond anything most of the rest of us could imagine but who nevertheless undertook, at great personal risk, this gargantuan task.”
Really? When has the man demonstrated compassion? How does congeniality equate with name-calling, mocking, insulting, causing harm with false accusations, endorsing violence, bragging, bullying, and lying? How can one deny that the presidency has been lucrative for Donald Trump and his family?
Call me small-minded if you wish.
