The Phoenix Suns went in house and out of the box with the hire of first-time NBA general manager Brian Gregory to lead the organization last week.
Gregory may not have the experience many Suns fans were looking for in the team’s new general manager hire. He does, however, have a good pulse on where the team is headed from a developmental standpoint after two years with the team.
Getting his start with the team as a consultant, Gregory flew out to Phoenix about two to three weeks out of every month. He spent a lot of time with both the coaches and players while also typing up different evaluations of players for the front office.
It was then when he was given the chance the work with Phoenix’s amateur evaluation group.
“A tremendous group. I grew immeasurably during that time in terms of the ability to evaluate and gather intelligence on players and so forth,” he said during his introductory press conference on Tuesday.

Gregory’s promotion to VP of player programming would soon follow.
And with his title changed, Gregory’s impact in amateur evaluations only increased.
“In addition to that, I was also put in charge and oversaw our entire amateur evaluation group which will then obviously lead to what we do in this year’s draft,” Gregory, who the team called “instrumental” in taking Suns rookies Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro in last year’s NBA Draft, said.
Gregory’s handprints on Phoenix’s new developmental approach don’t stop there, either, with the now-GM working alongside coaches and the analytical group on a “robust player development system” that was implemented last preseason.
The best part of Brian Gregory’s time in Phoenix before GM promotion
“The best part for me is over those two years … every facet of this organization, from the coaches, players, front office personnel, analytics, medical staff, strength and conditioning, equipment, I touched everybody in that,” Gregory said.
“For me, over a two-year span it was like a master’s class in what was going on within an NBA organization.”
Gregory is now in charge of righting of a Suns ship that sailed way off course behind a 36-46 mark with no playoffs to show for last season.
The team must also navigate the murky waters surrounding Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal and their status on the team.
“I will tell you this, I have a very good relationship with both those guys,” Gregory said. “Kevin gave me a nice hug in the weight room the other night. … Had a great dinner with Brad Beal last Thursday and we talked a little about summer plans and different things like that.
“My main focus right now is finding the right head coach for those guys and getting prepared for the draft. That’s where my mind is at 20 hours out of the 24 hours a day right now.”
