FBS program ruled ineligible for 2025 postseason due to academics

Calling FBS football players “student-athletes” these days might get you laughed at in this era of massive NIL payments, but there is still a certain academic standard football teams must meet in order to be postseason eligible.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that one squad has fallen below the threshold when it comes to the APR (Academic Progress Rate) and will not be eligible for bowl games (or the College Football Playoff) this year.

That school? Akron, which has an abysmal 914 APR rate, which constitutes a Level One Penalty, as you can see below:

Since 2020-21, Akron has seen a steady APR decline, going from 954 that year to 931, then 925 and finally 914.

How will this affect the bowl picture? Well … probably not much. Coach Joe Moorehead enters Year 4 in Akron having gone 2-10, 2-10 and 4-8 in his first 3 seasons. Yes, that jump from 2 wins to 4 was progress, but Akron wasn’t likely to make too much noise in the MAC this year.

Even if it doesn’t impact the bowl scene in 2025, we’ll see what steps Akron takes to try to fix its putrid APR rate and ensure it is eligible for bowl games moving forward.
