The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Thursday, May 8, will be releasing results from the final stage of a soil sampling study from areas around the Eaton and Palisades fire areas.
Last month, the county released preliminary findings which have led to subsequent testing and concern about what danger remains now four months out from both fires. Public health’s website includes various other water, air and soil studies that have been conducted in the aftermath of the fire.
It found elevated levels of lead on standing properties downwind of the Eaton fire. In the Palisades area the study revealed hotspots of chemical impacts but not widespread contamination. Officials said the levels found in both areas exceeded health screening thresholds which do not automatically mean cleanup is required, but suggested the need for more testing.
In response, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved $3 million toward additional soil testing for impacted residents in the Eaton fire area.
Thursday’s results will be from soil taken from properties that have had Phase-2 debris removal completed at their property. FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been criticized for only removing six inches of soil from properties they are clearing and not conducting any soil testing.
The town hall will be streamed on YouTube at 6 p.m.
