We've seen our fair share of impractical celebrity fashion. Just look to Jaden Smith's enormous castle headpiece at the Grammys or Lady Gaga's iconic four-part outfit change at the 2019 Met Gala. On the red carpet, fashion will forever trump functionality, but André 3000 took it a step further at the 2025 Met Gala by strapping a 30-pound piano to his back. Who needs the gym when you have the Met stairs and a weighted piano backpack?
The piano in question - created in 75 percent scale by design company Pink Sparrow - was modeled after an actual Steinway Model S baby grand (which typically weighs over 500 pounds). Thankfully, the company was able to use foam, luan, and 3D-printing to bring most of that weight down. In the end, André 3000's version rang in at only 30 pounds. But that's still an awful lot to lug up and down the Met staircase, especially if the weight wasn't evenly distributed. For context, think about how it'd feel to carry a full standard suitcase, a toddler, or a medium-sized pet on your back. After a while, you'd definitely start to feel the weight.
I was personally sweating watching André 3000 rucking around the red carpet, but in all honesty, he didn't seem terribly bothered. Maybe he has some unbelievable core routine we don't know about? Or perhaps there's some Icy Hot in that trash bag he was carrying around all night? While we don't exactly think anyone should wear a piano on their back for hours (the red carpet alone takes two to three), it gave us the drama we expect from the Met Gala. Plus, it proves that the Met can, in fact, double as a workout class. (But good luck getting off the waitlist . . . )
