India National Cricket Team batter Virat Kohli recalled the team's poor defeat in the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019. He said that he had the feeling of a horrible hangover and had no idea what to do next.
One of the most disappointing losses in the history of Indian cricket was the semi-final loss against the New Zealand National Cricket Team. The Virat Kohli-led side faced a horrible 18-run loss at Old Trafford in Manchester, which is still fresh in the minds of many.
India played a dominating brand of cricket in the entire ICC World Cup 2019. However, in the semi-final, New Zealand outclassed them. The Virat Kohli & Co had a terrific outing with the ball as they restricted the opposition to just around 240 runs in a game that was played over the course of two days due to rain.
Chasing the target, India had a forgettable start as in-form batters Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul were back in the hut early. The New Zealand National Cricket Team left the opposition tottering at 5/3 and it broke the backbone of the team.
However, after that, Ravindra Jadeja's 59-ball 77 and MS Dhoni's 72-ball 55 brought India back into the game. But they couldn't take their team home as New Zealand went on to win the game by the margin of 18 runs.
It was like the feeling you get when you have a horrible hangover - Virat Kohli
While talking about the loss, Virat Kohli rated the loss as massive, saying that he was dazed and had a horrible hangover. He pointed out that he had no idea what to do next. Speaking on the RCB podcast, he said:
“2019 loss was massive, that was the first time actually after the semifinals got over and the next morning we were going to leave Manchester. You know when you wake up, and you have no kind of understanding of what you want to do like you’re dazed.
"It was like the feeling you get when you have a horrible hangover. It was like that. Like I had no idea what I wanted to do, whether I wanted to drink coffee, brush my teeth, like what is the next step? Like I was completely gone. I could not make sense of it."
We had to play in the afternoon and it rained, and then we had to come the next morning - Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli pointed out how they were made to bat in the morning, and conditions played a part in that. He also added that they needed to accept that it wasn't meant to be, and while speaking about the same, he said:
“Everything was fine. We had to play in the afternoon and it rained, and then we had to come the next morning, early morning conditions, this, that and the others. I was like, what are the odds, but then again, how things unfolded again. So you have to kind of go back into that space of looking at things.
"You can't get lost in what happened to me and this is what I'm going through. Maybe it was meant to be that way. You just have to accept things the way, of course, accepting is very hard to process it is very hard, but you have to get to that point and you have to keep moving."
