Karun Nair assaulted after Delhi Capitals fate left hanging in IPL 2025

Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has expressed his shock over Delhi Capitals' decision to promote Karun Nair as an opener for their crucial clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2025.

Delhi Capitals faced Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 55th game of the IPL 2025 on Monday (May 5) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Axar Patel and his men were lucky to walk away with one precious point as the game was washed out.

Batting first, Delhi Capitals scored only 133/7 in the allotted 20 overs. The decision to promote Karun Nair ahead of Abishek Porel completely backfired as the right-handed batsman was out even before opening his account. At one stage, Delhi were reeling at 29/5.

Even the 100-run mark looked tough at that time but some useful contributions from the likes of Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma helped Delhi post a respectable total. While Delhi were staring at another defeat, they were saved by rain. The game was halted after Delhi's innings and was eventually called off.

    Shane Watson criticises Delhi Capitals:

With Nair failing to deliver with the bat as an opener, Shane Watson has criticised the Delhi Capitals team-management for their tactics. He called Nair's promotion to open the innings unnecessary. It was the sixth opening combination for the Delhi-based outfit this season.

"Something as simple as randomly changing the opening combination—for no apparent reason—was just not needed. I was genuinely surprised. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw Karun Nair walk out to open with Faf du Plessis. That move made no sense," Shane Watson said on Star Sports.

"Whatever the thinking was in the Delhi Capitals’ camp, I think they got that one completely wrong. When you start chopping and changing positions like that, it suggests there's no clarity in roles. Even if players aren't consciously overthinking, decisions like this can make them second-guess what’s going on," he added.

Delhi are currently at the fifth spot in the points table with 13 points from 11 games. On the other hand, SRH have been eliminated.
