The Union Colony Civic Center will release a survey to Greeley residents about possibly renaming the building to something that more accurately reflects its role as a performing arts center.
Members of the Union Colony Civic Center board have debated the topic as concerns began to rise that the facility’s current name doesn’t accurately reflect the UCCC’s purpose and historical connotations may result in a lack of attendance. The board created a special task force to investigate whether these concerns were valid.
“The current name does not clearly convey that this is a performing arts center, potentially limiting visibility and engagement,” Greeley Culture, Parks and Recreation director Diana Frick said. “When we are working with our promoters, they don’t always recognize that the civic center is actually a performing arts venue.”
Frick and UCCC Advisory Board chairperson Mark Pugatch went before the city council on April 22 to get approval to survey Greeley residents. The survey will ask residents if the name accurately reflects the UCCC and if it has historical connotations that impact whether residents decide to attend performances. The survey will also provide potential name alternatives.
“Rather than making any assumptions, we believe it’s critical to hear directly from the community before making any recommendations,” Frick said.
Concern about historical connotations revolves around recent negative associations with the word “colony.” As an organization that prides itself on promoting diversity, the UCCC is willing to change its name to attract residents who might be put off by it.
“Our history was very, very exclusive,” councilwoman Deb Deboutez said, agreeing with those concerns. “I can see how some folks in our community could be offended by that.”
Other city council members were largely indifferent about the issue, with Mayor John Gates stating that upon his first reading of the UCCC’s proposal, his first thought was, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
“I haven’t heard anything about the name, but I’ve heard other things about the Union Colony Civic Center,” councilman Johnny Olson said, tacking on to Gates’ comments.
Olson told Frick he has heard comments regarding the condition of the building, as well as some of the events, but nothing about the name. He then suggested the survey be expanded to include questions about general improvements the center could make as a whole.
The city council gave its unanimous consent for the UCCC board’s task force to proceed with developing the survey, adding in a request to expand the questions to include other topics about the civic center. There is currently not an anticipated date as to when the survey will be circulated.
