U.S. President Donald Trump directed his attention to the film industry on Monday, threatening in a series of social media posts to inflict tariffs on movies produced outside of the United States.
In a meandering commentary that Trump posted to social media network Truth Social, he claimed without basis that the American movie industry was dying a “very fast death” because of incentives to make films and television shows in countries other than the United States.
“This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Trump added on another social media post, “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”
Studios have been using foreign locations as well as Hollywood for years because of tax incentives and lower production costs.
Disney, Netflix, and Universal Pictures film movies and TV shows in Canada and Britain, as well as in the United States.
The Department of Commerce and other government agencies are currently being authorized to immediately begin the process of imposing a 100% tariff on all films produced abroad and sent to the United States.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick posted on social media: “We’re on it.”
Trump appointed Hollywood veterans Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson in January as symbolic ambassadors to bring Hollywood back “bigger, better and stronger than ever before.”
No details on how to implement the tariffs have been provided.
