SF Giants trying to get Matos on track in crowded outfield

SAN FRANCISCO — It’s been tough for Luis Matos to get on a roll when anchored to the bench.

Welcome to the 2025 Giants, where the revolving door of transactions has been slammed shut under the direction of president of baseball operations Buster Posey as executed by manager Bob Melvin.

Matos is just 2-for-28 dating back to April 8, but reached base three times in Saturday’s 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. Matos hit a solo home run against Bradley Blalock which stood as the only Giants run until a five-run sixth that included a grand slam.

The Giants went into Sunday’s game having played 34 games (21-13), with Matos playing in 14 of them and hitting. 167 (7-for-42) with a homer and two RBIs.

Matos, who started at designated hitter, walked twice and scored twice. His reward? Matos was back in the lineup Sunday in left field, batting seventh, as the Giants closed out a four-game series against the Rockies. It probably wasn’t an easy call, given that the man he replaced in the lineup, Heliot Ramos, is 13-for-43 (.302) with nine runs a double and, two homers and three RBIs in his last 13 games.

The Giants begin a two-city, six-game road trip to Chicago to face the Cubs and then on to Minnesota to play the Twins.

With Ramos, center fielder Jung Hoo Lee and right fielder Mike Yastrzemski all having solid years offensively and defensive, it’s been tough for Matos, still only 23, to gain traction in terms of playing time.

“We’ve got three pretty good outfielders already,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. “A younger player when you’re used to playing every , the hard part is acclimating to a non-every day role. But you have to do it. We basically have a set lineup as far as the outfield goes. Typically we’ve targeted him for left handed pitching.

“Yesterday and today, we’re giving him chance to face a couple of righties. As a young player it’s something you have to deal with and you have to figure it out at some point in time.”

With the Giants loathe to making daily transactions as in the Farhan Zaidi years, or lineup changes for that matter, it’s created a more serene clubhouse. It’s also less of a burden for Melvin when it comes to a daily lineup, given the penchant of managers to try and get players recently called up into the lineup as soon as possible.

“I don’t think it’s more stress on me,” Melvin said. “I think it’s less stress on the players to know that. I don’t know if it’s stress. It’s more continuity. We’ve been very minimal as far as transactions go, and I think with Buster, that’s been by design at this point. But there are going to be some moves.”

    NOTES

    — After a brief hiccup earlier in the season that had the fan base in an uproar, Camilo Doval has given up one hit with a win and three saves in his lsat 11 outings with two walks and three strikeouts. He had another scoreless inning Saturday.

“He’s just back to form, and I think each and every year you mature as a pitcher and are able to move past some of the struggles,” Melvin said. “It was only a couple of games. If you look at his body of work over the course of a season, it’s pretty consistent.”

    — Shortstop Willy Adames has a hit in 10 of his last 14 games and is hitting .265 in that span. Melvin believes it’s just the beginning.

“It seems like he has a much calmer approach,” Melvin said. “He’s not trying to do too much. The production is going to be there. In the last few days you can see him setting it up for the guys behind him too. Some really good at-bats, and his defense looks really good two. Sometimes with a new team you try to do too much, but we’re seeing the type of player he is. I think if you look at it over the years, he gets off to slow starts anyway.”
