CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Fifty-five young children with intellectual disabilities were able to finally experience the airport Saturday evening.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport hosts a special annual program called "Wings For All" in collaboration with The Arc North Carolina and Delta Air Lines.
The special national event allows families to help their children get acclimated to the hustle and bustle of an airport — and even an airplane.
Queen City News reporter Shaquira Speaks exclusively spoke to some of those families about the program's importance for special children.
"You see all over social media the kid that's crying, the kids that's having a tantrum. And it's hard for a child when you think about just a "normal child". It's loud. There's air pressure. That sounds so I imagine that exacerbated a thousand for someone who has a light sensitivity, who has a sound sensitivity, who doesn't like to be touched on their shoulders or touched on their face," Salena Brown said about her 7-year-old autistic son Khai.
Brown says the things that most people think are common and simple are not common and simple and she wants to remind people to always think of other people.
"If we just stop for a moment and think of other people and be considerate, you will see the world in a different view. So I'm happy that I get to see people who look like him, who may stutter like he does, who may pause, who may not get it the first time or the fourth time. And it's still okay to keep trying," she said.
Participants learn how to check in with an airline, pass through security, find their assigned gate, board a plane, and taxi onto the airfield.
