Controversy, confusion & missed review: 15 seconds that decided RCB vs CSK outcome

On a night of high drama at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) edged past the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by just two runs in a nail-biting encounter. But amid the thrilling finish, a contentious on-field decision involving Dewald Brevis became a major talking point — one that may have ultimately cost CSK the game.

CSK coach blames confusion

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming addressed the incident post-match, describing it as a “big moment” that left his players unsure of the protocol. The flashpoint occurred in the 17th over of CSK’s chase when Brevis was struck on the pad by a full toss from Lungi Ngidi.

Fleming suggested the players were distracted by the live action unfolding and uncertain about when the countdown had started. “There was a fair bit eaten up with the play still being completed,” he said, also clarifying that even if the review had been successful, the leg-byes wouldn’t have counted due to the immediate LBW dismissal.

“In talking to Jaddu [Jadeja] and Brevis, there was a lot going on with running straight away. I think they saw the ball ricochet and actually went to the boundary for four. And lost in that was whether Brevis took the review in time. I don’t know the answer to that. He wasn’t sure, given that they were running at the time.

“As soon as you’re given out, I understand the timer starts. There was a fair bit eaten up with the play still being completed, and whether they just ran out of time… in the umpire’s view, it did. The other part about it, because he was given out, we wouldn’t have got the runs. While we would have maintained the wicket, it certainly wouldn’t have given us the five runs, which would have been nice.

What exactly happened – and what the rules say

The controversy erupted in the 17th over of CSK’s chase when Lungi Ngidi bowled a full toss that hit Brevis on the pad. By that time, CSK needed 42 off 22 balls, a game that was largely in their hands, considering the visitors had seven wickets in hand.

The umpire immediately raised his finger, and while Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja ran a single — thinking the ball had reached the boundary — the critical 15-second DRS timer began ticking. It was at that moment when tensions flared high. Virat Kohli and other RCB players were in the umpire’s ears that the DRS timer has been completed. Nitin

However, rather than reviewing straight away, Brevis and Jadeja took time to assess, eventually missing the 15-second review window. As per IPL playing conditions, once a batter is given out, the ball is dead, and the review must be requested within 15 seconds. The umpires denied the late review, and replays later showed the delivery was missing leg stump — a huge moment lost.

On ESPNcricinfo, analysts Danny Morrison and Piyush Chawla pulled no punches. Morrison criticized the delay, asking, “Why are you saving your reviews? Do you cash those in?” Chawla was more direct: “You don’t need to discuss. Just take the review.” Both pointed to a lack of match awareness, particularly disappointing with an in-form Brevis at the crease and CSK needing 42 off 21.

In the end, CSK fell short by just two runs. The missed review looms large — not just as an error in judgment, but as a potentially decisive lapse in a crunch IPL clash.
