Bundesliga officials bent the rules so Harry Kane could celebrate his first ever trophy… only for a dramatic RB Leipzig equaliser forced him to wait.
The England captain looked set to be confirmed as a Bundesliga champion on Saturday until RB Leipzig scored in the last minute of stoppage time to make it 3-3.
Leipzig went 2-0 up in the game, before Bayern scored three second-half goals to take the lead.
Ex-Premier League stars Eric Dier, Michael Olise and Leroy Sane put the German giants in a position which would have seen them clinch the title with two games to spare.
However, a late equaliser from Yussuf Poulsen in the fifth minute of stoppage time means that the champagne will need to be put on ice.
Kane was helpless as he watched on from the stands with the former Tottenham striker serving a suspension.
However, the 31-year-old was pitchside in the dying moments, ready to join his teammates in celebration.
Bundesliga rules state that suspended players are not allowed on the pitch for 30 minutes before kick-off and after the final whistle.
However, Bild report that officials gave Kane special permission so he could celebrate his first trophy with his teammates.
Only for Leipzig to score and make them wait.
Despite establishing himself as one of the greatest strikers of his generation, Kane is looking to end a major trophy drought which has lasted his entire career.
Bayern are now nine points clear of Bayer Leverkusen who have a game in hand as they face Freiburg on Sunday.
Kane is still all-but certain to become a Bundesliga championGettyKane’s side will be confirmed as champions if Leverkusen slip up.
If not, Bayern will host Borussia Monchengladbach on May 10 in their final home game of the season, needing a point to seal the deal.
Leverkusen’s goal difference is still dramatically inferior, meaning Bayern are all-but champions already, and just need mathematical confirmation.
Kane is hugely responsible for that, leading the Bundesliga goalscoring charts with 24 league goals this season.
He was fuming at his suspension after picking up a fifth yellow card against Mainz, saying post-match: “First of all, I think it’s an insane decision. It’s never a yellow card.
“Unfortunately, sometimes people come to the Allianz Arena and try to make a name for themselves.
“That’s why I’m really disappointed that I got the yellow card, because of course I knew I already had four.
“And secondly, I think the rule is crazy anyway. Five yellow cards in 34 games means a suspension. That’s crazy.
“Crazy, crazy decision. It’s kind of my story that I’ll miss the Leipzig game. But no worries, I’ll celebrate more than anyone else.”
Thankfully for Kane, he is free to return for the Monchengladbach clash next Saturday.
Also set to collect his first trophy will be former Spurs teammate Dier, who is set to leave Bayern on a free transfer to Monaco this summer.
