Jake Paul sends one-word message to Canelo Alvarez after ‘boring’ William Scull fight

Jake Paul believes Canelo Alvarez’s victory over William Scull was ‘embarrassing.’

Canelo overcame Scull in a dull 12-round fight on Saturday night to unify the super middleweight titles.

The bout has subsequently teed up a blockbuster meeting in September between Canelo and Terence Crawford, who will move up two weight classes to box the Mexican superstar.

YouTuber-turned-professional boxer Paul was left furious three months ago when Canelo pulled the plug on their crossover fight.

It was reported that Canelo was finalising a deal to face Paul in Las Vegas on the same night that the former ended up squaring off with Scull.

Paul, seemingly still frustrated at Canelo, took to X and aired his thoughts once the 34-year-old from Guadalajara had secured the unanimous decision victory.

“Embarrassing,” the 28-year-old said, with no follow up.

Paul is the co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, and one of its fighters, Amanda Serrano – the unified featherweight world champion – had a similar opinion.

“I’m not trying to be funny or disrespectful, but I promise you Jake Paul would have went out on his shield and came to win,” she said.

    “What am I watching?”

Canelo became a two-time undisputed super middleweight champion by defeating Scull in Riyadh, but the fight was far from the spectacle it was promoted as.

Both men did more posturing than punching and actually set a new record for the fewest punches thrown in a 12-round fight.

Overall, only 445 punches were thrown over the distance: Canelo with 152 hits and Scull with 293 punches, putting it rock bottom on CompuBox’s 40-year history punch counter.

Canelo acknowledged the imminent negative reaction in his post-fight interview.

“He just came to survive from the third round, that’s why I don’t like it,” he told Ring Magazine.

“For me that’s a boring fight when a fighter doesn’t try to win, just tries to survive. I hate those kind of fighters.

“He moved even more than I thought he would. But it’s OK, we won. I’m a two-time undisputed champion and I’m proud to fight in Saudi Arabia.”

Canelo will now have a short break before getting back into training camp for a mammoth clash with Crawford.

Crawford, 37, is just one of three male boxers in the four-belt era to have achieved undisputed supremacy in two separate weight classes, alongside legends like Oleksandr Usyk and Naoya Inoue.

Incredibly, if ‘Bud’ can defy the odds that will inevitably be stacked against him and hand Canelo his third defeat, then he will become the first three-weight undisputed champion since the WBO was recognised as a major sanctioning body.

“I’m feeling blessed,” Crawford, who was in attendance for Canelo’s fight, said in the ring, before facing off with the Mexican.

“Everything happens for a reason, and there is a reason why I am here.

“In September, I’m going to show the world what greatness looks like.”

Asked why he believes he can knock Canelo off of his 168lbs perch, Crawford added: “Because I am the best. That is why everyone is going to come and watch on September 12.”

Canelo then said: “I feel great. Crawford is one of the best out there. “And I like to share the ring with that kind of fighter. It is my pleasure.”

Both men already had an agreement in place to fight before Canelo’s win over Scull, and all the former needed to do was win.

And, although it was a painful watch, he did, setting up what has the potential to be an all-time boxing classic.

Paul, meanwhile, faces his toughest test yet in June when he takes on Julio Cesar Chavez in June.

Former six-weight world champion Oscar de la Hoya believes the fight is ‘a huge step’ towards Paul’s world title ambitions.
