Major shakeup to Lowes, Wayfair and Walmart Spring sales dates as rumors swirl around price hikes in coming weeks

RETAILERS have launched their spring sales early.

The premature sales come amid tariff uncertainty and shifting consumer habits.

Major retailers are rolling out their spring promotions earlier than usual this year.

Some experts say this trend reflects growing concerns over potential tariff impacts and changing consumer behavior.

Wayfair’s popular Way Day sale, which typically features steep discounts on home goods, took place from April 26 to April 28.

This was nearly a week earlier than in 2023, and it was extended by two more days.

Lowe’s SpringFest also started earlier this year, running from March 20 to April 16, about two weeks ahead of last year’s schedule.

Walmart+ Week, which offers members fuel discounts and delivery perks rather than traditional product deals, launched on April 28, more than a month ahead of its 2023 dates.

Though it’s unclear whether global politics directly influenced the timing, analysts note that the earlier timing could help retailers space promotions around holidays like Easter and Mother’s Day.

Still, the early sales could also reflect strategic planning ahead of the expected end to a 90-day pause on new tariffs in early July.

“This year, sales are taking on a more critical importance because of the tariff pressures that are facing retail and the consumer economy at large, with consumers feeling a lot of dread over what’s coming,” said Sky Canaves, principal retail and e-commerce analyst at eMarketer.

Canaves added that discount-heavy sales at major retailers could pressure competitors like Temu and Shein, who may be forced to raise prices due to tariffs.

According to Duleep Rodrigo, consumer and retail leader at KPMG, early deals on seasonal items may be aimed at clearing shelves and stimulating demand ahead of a potentially slow summer.

“You’re starting to see retailers offer some really sweet deals to get some of this inventory off their shelves,” Rodrigo said.

Not all spring promotions are happening earlier – Amazon and Walmart both held March sales events around the same time as last year, with Amazon’s Big Spring Sale running March 25–31 and Walmart’s Super Savings Week overlapping slightly from March 24–April 1.

However, a Walmart spokesperson said the company moved some promotions forward to distinguish them from crowded summer deal events.

Wayfair declined to comment due to a pre-earnings quiet period, and Lowe’s did not respond to a request for comment.

According to Brad Jashinsky, director analyst at Gartner, most large retailers set their calendars well in advance, making them slow to respond to market changes.

“I haven’t seen sales messaging as much along those lines,” Jashinsky said, referring to tariff-themed promotions.

“I think that’s due to a worry that overly discounting now may lead to not having the [necessary] inventory to sustain throughout the rest of the year.”

Smaller direct-to-consumer brands have experimented with “pre-tariff” sales, and even some car dealerships have leaned into that messaging, but the tactic hasn’t yet gained traction across most major retailers.

As inflation persists and uncertainty clouds the rest of 2025, these early-season discounts may be one of the last big opportunities for shoppers to take advantage before potential price hikes.
