Rolly Romero revealed he injured his shoulder warming up moments before his shock win against Ryan Garcia.
Despite the injury Romero secured a unanimous victory over Garcia at Times Square, New York.
The 29-year-old was a massive underdog but he was not disheartened by the oddsmakers overlooking him.
Romero knocked Garcia down in the second round with a double lead hook that caught the 26-year-old on the chin.
The welterweight bout was scored in favour of Romero 115-112, 115-112 and 118-109.
“He fought a good fight, caught me early. No excuses, man. Congrats to him – he did a great job,” Garcia said.
Speaking at the post-fight conference, Romero said: “I didn’t warm up properly and then in the back room I threw one of these weird uppercuts from far away and I messed up my shoulder.
“So I didn’t want to risk it. The one time I threw slow, I’m like ‘I’m not going to do that’.
“The whole boxing commission saw my massage girl literally massaging it so it might have made it a little weaker.”
Despite the injury, Romero was able to outbox Garcia who seemed hesitant to unleash his quick hands.
It is a result that scuppered the chances of a planned rematch of Garcia against Devin Haney.
Garcia dominated Haney, dropping him three times but the victor tested positive for the banned substance ostarine, meaning the result was overturned into a no-contest.

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) handed Garcia a one year drug suspension.
Garcia and Haney had reached an agreement to step into the ring together in late 2025.
They went back and forth throughout the build for Friday’s fight to set up their rematch despite each having an opponent to beat.
Haney beat Jose Carlos Ramirez via unanimous decision which left viewers angered by the forgettable bout.
Boxing fans were not satisfied with the headline fight either, as after round two, Romero and Garcia seemed unwilling to commit.
Haney was shown shaking his head at the final bell. Now his and Garcia’s future remains a mystery.
