Officials on Friday previewed the H Barracks site, which will serve as another lot in the city’s Safe Parking Program when it opens this month.
The barracks, near San Diego International Airport, is intended to have 190 spaces for people in the program. The San Diego City Council approved a one-year contract with nonprofit Jewish Family Service of San Diego to continue running the program last week.
“This new site at H Barracks,” Mayor Todd Gloria said, will help 190 individuals or families experiencing homelessness while they also use their cars to get to work or take children to school.
The program already has 200 spaces, so the council action to approve the site nearly doubles the number of spaces where people can legally park and sleep.
Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell, who represents the area, called the Safe Parking Program “one of the city’s most successful homelessness programs.”
The four current program sites include restrooms and services, mental health guidance and job training among them.
The H Barracks, previously military housing, were torn down earlier this year. The area is the future site of a San Diego Pure Water treatment facility.
The lot could be open through 2029. The city has four one-year options to renew the agreement before the treatment facility begins operations.
