President Donald Trump was in Tuscaloosa on Thursday to deliver the commencement address to the University of Alabama’s graduating Class of 2025. He covered a lot during his address, but he took plenty of time to love on the Alabama football program and the Alabama athletic department at large.
Former head coach and 7-time national champion Nick Saban introduced the President and shared a bit about his past experience with Trump. In turn, the President mentioned Saban’s impact on college football and showed current head coach Kalen DeBoer some appreciation as well.
“As a student at Alabama, you will always remember where you were when your head coach, Nick Saban, retired,” Trump said. “Remember that? He’s done such a fantastic job. That’s true with Nick. What a great coach. Let’s bring him back. No, you have a good coach right now, though. You have a good coach right now.”
Trump mentioned the last time he was in Tuscaloosa, to see the Tide beat Georgia 41-34 last September. “That was some game,” he said as the crowd roared. Trump also gave a “Roll Tide” to the crowd and said Alabama’s athletic department is second to none.
“Everywhere you look, you can see the fierce spirit of this school, but nowhere more clearly than in your world-class athletics,” the President said. “There’s nothing like it. Probably there’s no school like it.”
He also referred to the school as Titletown USA. Saban won 6 titles during his tenure with the Tide. He claimed 3 BCS Championships in a 4-year period and then won the College Football Playoff 3 times. Under Saban, Alabama made appearances in the CFP 8 times in 10 years.
“There’s something truly special about the players, coaches, and the fans that pack the stands at Bryant-Denny Stadium and proudly sing Dixieland Delight,” Trump said. “We like that. Alabama has changed college football forever and inscribed into the history books the names of Bear Bryant, Joe Namath, 4 Heisman Trophy winners, and, of course, the great Nick Saban. This place is truly where legends are made.”
