Kelsey Grammerhas shared the chilling final moments of his sister’s life.
Kelsey’s sister, Karen, was brutally raped and murdered in Colorado Springs on July 1, 1975, just two weeks shy of her 19th birthday. Fifty years after this heartbreaking tragedy, Kelsey details her life and the pain of losing her in Karen: A Brother Remembers (out May 6).
TheFraiser actor recounts her final hours in an excerpt shared with PEOPLE. The two siblings chatted on June 30, 1975, and Karen told Kelsey she planned to visit him in Florida after the Fourth of July.
Hours after their talk, around 11 p.m., she’d gone to the Red Lobster where she’d worked, hoping to meet a friend after their shift. While she waited, three men—one named Feddie Glenn—drove up to the restaurant, planning to rob it.

When they spotted her, they told Karen to come with them. She asked, “For what?”
The men chose not to rob the restaurant. Instead, they drove to one of their apartments, where they each took turns sexually assaulting her.
Afterwards, they drove her to an alley where Glenn stabbed her 42 times and nearly decapitated her. With her dying breath, Karen sought out assistance from a local, to no avail.
“She had fallen backward from the trailer door after knocking for help,” he writes in PEOPLE’s preview. “It was her last hope and disappointment after crawling 400 feet from the place where she had been stabbed. Bloody fingerprints mark the trail of her final moments at exactly 3’6” along the office and walls of the trailer park. She had been on her knees, crawling her way. Seeking help with her last ounce of life.”
Kelsey writes of the “unimaginable brutality” of Glenn’s attack, how he left a gaping wound in her neck, and that the coroner could “see all the way into Karen’s lung.”
Freddie Glenn was convicted of Karen’s murder (along with several other killings in the area). He was sentenced to life in prison and has been denied parole four times.
Kelsey wrote the book to process his grief and “breathe life” into Karen. He details her as a free-spirited and loving woman whose life was more than her murder. “We were Kelsey and Karen, brother and sister.”
