The Foothill and St. Margaret’s boys lacrosse teams have a history of playing close games against each other in the CIF-SS playoffs.
Foothill defied history this season and cruised to a 12-6 win over St. Margaret’s in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs Thursday at Foothill High.
The Knights (14-7) beat St. Margaret’s (13-7) in the playoffs for three consecutive seasons in 2021-23 and the total margin of victory in those three games was four goals.
“I’m just excited for our seniors to get a win in their last game on this field,” Foothill coach John Fox said. “It’s always great to battle St. Margaret’s. It’s an old rivalry from the early days up to today. It’s a great program and both sides went hard. We were fortunate to have a lot of possessions tonight.”
The Knights, led primarily by face-off specialist Logan Cummins, won 18 of 22 face-offs and had the ball for much of the game.
“It made all the difference,” Fox said. “Their offense is really dynamic and difficult to stop so it was really helpful to win those face-offs.”
Orange County player of the year candidate Ben Wehage was outstanding for Foothill. The senior attackman scored three goals and had five assists. He scored or assisted on the first six goals of the game for the Knights.
Wehage leads Foothill in points with 83 after tallying 19 last season. His five assists Thursday are a career-high. He will play lacrosse at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute next season.
“He stepped into the role this year being captain of the offense,” Fox said of Wehage. “He’s done a great job.”
The Knights led 6-2 at halftime and Kyle Seinturier scored in the first two minutes of the second half to increase the lead to five goals.
Jack Shea scored for St. Margaret’s, which had a man advantage after a two-minute unreleasable penalty by Foothill for high-sticking to stop the 4-0 run.
Foothill responded 36 seconds later with a goal by Tavin Russell despite the man disadvantage.
Seinturier had three goals and Carson Fairbanks added two. Fairbanks and Russell each had assists and seven of Foothill’s 12 goals were assisted.
Shea had two goals for St. Margaret’s and Andrew Toubin added two. Toubin added an assist and Carson Barber scored in the second quarter.
St. Margaret’s beat Foothill earlier this season, 11-9 on April 12. The Tartans won their 12 Pacific Coast League games by a total score of 256-25.
Foothill advances to Tuesday’s second round and will play at JSerra. The Knights beat JSerra 11-7 on Feb. 25 in a game where Russell scored five goals.
“It’s going to be a tight battle,” Fox said. “They have an incredible face-off guy and last time we played they got more possessions than us. We’re going to have to button up our defense. They have some dynamic scorers so we’re going to have to slow them down.”
Also in the Division 1 playoffs Thursday:
Corona del Mar 12, Servite 11: Owen Majit scored seven goals for Corona del Mar against visiting Servite.
Auggy Luong, Michael Mulroy, Garrett Ip and Alex Aldoroty also scored for the Sea Kings (12-6).
Servite (11-7) handed Corona del Mar its first loss of the season on Feb. 27.
Quentin Hodge, Justin Helmer and Collin Wang each scored two goals for Servite. Jack Mulvania had 12 saves.
Corona del Mar will play top-seeded Loyola in the second round Tuesday.
