Dodgers add relievers J.P. Feyereisen, Ryan Loutos to roster

The Dodgers were not idle on their day off.

They added a pair of relief pitchers with major-league experience while moving Michael Kopech and Blake Treinen to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on the 40-man roster.

Added were right-handers J.P. Feyereisen and Ryan Loutos.

Feyereisen, 32, returns to the Dodgers as a waiver claim from the Arizona Diamondbacks. After parts of three seasons split between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays, the right-hander signed with the Dodgers before the 2023 season then spent the year recovering from shoulder surgery. He made 10 appearances with the Dodgers last season (with an 8.18 ERA) and spent most of the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

He signed as a free agent with the Diamondbacks this spring and made just two appearances for them before he was designated for assignment.

Lotus was also designated for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals and acquired by the Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations. He signed with the Cardinals in 2021 after going undrafted out of nearby Washington University and made his big-league debut with 2⅓ scoreless innings over three appearances. He had a 3.38 ERA in eight appearances for Triple-A Memphis before being designated for assignment this week.

But Loutos made his mark on the Cardinals’ organization without pitching. Lotus studied computer science in college and was involved in coding an app called “Chirp” that is used by pitchers in the Cardinals’ organization to analyze their performances.

The IL moves, meanwhile, include troubling news regarding Treinen. The Dodgers have offered no updates or timetable for his return since he went on the IL two weeks ago with what was announced as a low-grade forearm sprain. He will not be eligible to return now until mid-June at the earliest.

Kopech has not pitched this season after pitching with forearm discomfort during the postseason run last fall. He has moved his rehab to Arizona and could start a minor-league rehab assignment soon. He will be eligible to return on May 18.
