Pastor Al Hernandez has been behind the pulpit for 31 years at various Greeley churches. During that time, he has also led National Day of Prayer services in Denver and Colorado Springs. Thursday afternoon marked his first time leading the event in Greeley.
About 50 people gathered before Hernandez in front of the Weld County Courthouse in downtown Greeley, including a few community leaders. Hernandez, the pastor at Centro Victoria Church in Greeley, greeted everyone with blessings and a prayer.
Designated by the U.S. Congress, the National Day of Prayer invites people of all faiths to pray for the nation and its leaders. On Thursday, Hernandez wanted to focus prayers toward younger generations in the community.
“I really feel that there’s a disconnection between the adults in the community and this new generation,” Hernandez said in an interview before the service. “We feel there’s a disconnection between parents and their youth and our city leaders.”

His comments drew amens from the crowd.
Mayor John Gates, Greeley Police Chief Adam Turk, Greeley Fire Deputy Chief Chris Ellmer and Colorado State Board of Education Member Yazmin Navarro joined various pastors from local churches and other attendees. Hernandez said having those leaders at the event was important to show them that their leadership in the community is vital.
“I really feel — and that’s what God put in my heart — is that they’re key,” he said. “They’re key to this event because if our community sees them there, they’re not only a government leader or role models, somehow they’re making their faith present, no matter what their faith is.”

“I’m honored and humbled to be here as your police chief,” Turk said. “This community outreach and engagement, which is the reason I love this job, to be with our community during these positive moments.”
National Day of Prayer has been observed on the first Thursday of May of each year since 1988, but the event’s roots date back over 200 years. Various presidents have observed the day at the White House or have acknowledged it over the years.

At the event, Trump signed an executive order establishing the Religious Liberty Commission. The commission is tasked with producing a report on religious liberty in the U.S., including its impacts, threats, strategies to preserve and enhance protections for religious liberty and programs celebrating religious pluralism. The commission will also advise the White House Faith Office and Domestic Policy Council.
Back at the Greeley event, Pastor Nick Seders of the Greeley First Assembly of God was the first to lead the closing prayers.
“Lord Jesus, we are here today lifting up our nation, our state and our locality and putting it in your hands,” he said. “God, we pray that you would continue to make yourself known in our community.”
