The San Diego Police Department has adopted “My90,” a new communication and engagement tool that sends automated text messages to the public about their service calls.
The tool also allows for feedback via confidential surveys, the department announced Thursday.
The messages give the public information about their calls and in some cases will help them to be better prepared for police to arrive, officials said.
The department said it dispatches nearly a million calls annually. Chief Scott Wahl described “capturing feedback from the community on this scale” as invaluable.

SDPD added that My90 will help officers to better inform, understand and serve the community. Survey results will be available to the public.
My90 is offered by the firm Axon, which develops technology for public safety agencies. It also provides departments with dashboards that the company says offer “actionable insights to guide decisions related to trainings, policies, employee well-being and community engagement initiatives.”
Axon is based in Scottsdale.
