The mayor of the town of Sahnaya in rural Damascus, Hussam Warwar, and his son were killed by unknown assailants just hours after the entrance of the General Security Forces, which took control of the town amid reports of violations.
Several local media outlets, including “al-Raased,” reported today, May 1, that five individuals were executed “in the field” following the entrance of the General Security into the towns of Sahnaya and Ashrafiat Sahnaya, including the mayor and his son, who was killed yesterday, though no indication was given regarding the entity that carried out the execution.
The Suwayda 24 network mentioned that gunmen, whose affiliation was not specified, stormed Warwar’s house yesterday and shot him and his son dead.
Warwar appeared in a video published by the official Alikhbaria Syria channel, following the entrance of the General Security into the town, welcoming them and expressing his cooperation, stating that the General Security entered the town “with full respect.”
Al-Raased noted that there were arrests and violations against civilians in the two towns, along with insults directed at them by General Security personnel. Conversely, the local network described the situation in the area as “less severe” than reported in the media.
On the other hand, the official news agency (SANA) stated that life had returned to normal in Ashrafiat Sahnaya, with the deployment of General Security Forces in the town to maintain security and ensure the safety of residents.
The Sahnaya News Network page published a video showing a meeting between leaders of the General Security and local dignitaries, indicating a call to hand over weapons to the government starting today until next Sunday.
The town of Ashrafiat Sahnaya in rural Damascus has witnessed tensions between pro-government factions and local groups following similar clashes in the city of Jarmana, after the circulation of an audio recording attributed to one of the Druze community’s sheikhs (who later denied it) containing insults against the Prophet Muhammad.
Following the clashes, the government reached a “preliminary” agreement between representatives of the Druze community and dignitaries from Sahnaya and Jarmana with the Syrian government, agreeing to a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the governor of rural Damascus, Amer al-Sheikh, stated during a press conference attended by Enab Baladi yesterday that security forces had managed to regain full control over Ashrafiat Sahnaya and arrested and killed members of the “outlawed” group.
He added that Israeli airstrikes targeted elements of the General Security in the city of Sahnaya, resulting in the death of one of them, as well as a civilian from the local community.
